The Poetry of Brian Langley
Badges of Merit
A boy scout wears his shirt with pride
For sewn on it are
The badges that denote the skills
That he has learnt so far
Like how to make some billy tea
And how to boil an egg
And how to darn his woolen sox
And mend a broken leg
And how to care for animals
When they are almost dead
And how to tidy up his room
And neatly make his bed
But there’s one badge that isn’t there
The one they always miss
The one that says he’s passed the test
Of his first real kiss
